miraDry FAQ's

MIRADRY® FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Your Questions. Dr. Scott Gerrish’s Expertise.

How does miraDry® work?

miraDry® uses FDA-cleared thermal energy to permanently eliminate sweat and odor glands in the underarms. Because these glands do not regenerate, results are long-lasting. The treatment includes advanced cooling technology to protect the surrounding skin while delivering targeted energy precisely where it’s needed.

Is miraDry® safe?

Yes. miraDry® has an excellent safety profile, with hundreds of thousands of treatments performed worldwide. Mild swelling, tenderness, or temporary numbness may occur following treatment and typically resolves over time.

Dr. Scott Gerrish and our experienced clinical team carefully evaluate every patient to ensure miraDry® is an appropriate treatment for their needs.

What can I expect during treatment?

After your consultation, the underarm area is numbed for comfort before the miraDry® device delivers controlled thermal energy to the sweat and odor glands.

Treatment typically takes about one hour, and most patients return to normal daily activities immediately afterward.

How should I prepare for my miraDry® appointment?

  • Shave your underarms 4–6 days before treatment so a small amount of hair remains.
  • Avoid deodorant or antiperspirant the evening before treatment.
  • Wear a loose-fitting shirt or tank top.
  • Provide your complete medical history and current medications during your consultation.

When will I see results?

Many patients notice a significant reduction in sweat and odor immediately after treatment, with continued improvement as swelling resolves.

Your results continue to develop over the weeks following treatment.

Will I stop sweating completely?

No.

The underarms contain only about 2% of the body’s sweat glands. miraDry® permanently reduces sweat in the treated area while allowing the rest of your body to continue regulating temperature normally.

Clinical studies have shown an average:

  • 82% reduction in underarm sweat

  • 89% reduction in underarm odor

How many treatments will I need?

Most patients achieve their desired results with one or two treatments.

Your recommendation will depend on your anatomy, the severity of sweating, and your treatment goals.

What is recovery like?

Recovery is generally straightforward.

You may experience:

  • Mild swelling

  • Tenderness

  • Temporary numbness

  • Bruising

Most patients return to work immediately and resume exercise within several days.

Ice packs and following your aftercare instructions help maximize comfort during recovery.

Can miraDry® reduce underarm hair?

Yes.

Many patients experience a reduction in underarm hair because the treatment also affects nearby hair follicles. While hair removal is not the primary goal, it is often considered an added benefit.

Who is not a candidate for miraDry®?

miraDry® may not be appropriate if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Have a pacemaker or certain implanted electronic devices

  • Have an allergy to local anesthetics

  • Have an active infection in the treatment area

  • Form significant keloid scars

  • Have recently taken Accutane®

Dr. Scott Gerrish and our experienced clinical team will determine whether miraDry® is appropriate during your consultation.

Is miraDry® covered by insurance?

miraDry® is considered an elective treatment and is not typically covered by insurance.

Financing options may be available for qualified patients.

How does miraDry® compare to Botox® for excessive sweating?

Unlike Botox®, which temporarily blocks sweat production and requires ongoing maintenance, miraDry® permanently eliminates the treated sweat and odor glands.

Many patients appreciate the long-lasting results without the need for repeat injections every few months.
